September – Gauja National Park anniversary month

The first National Park in Latvia is celebrating 35th anniversary this year. Gauja National Park Administration continues its tradition - every year during the anniversary week of this protected territory one day is determined, when Latvian citizens and foreign guests can visit popular tourism objects without paying an entrance fee. For this reason, at Friday, 12th of September Gauja NP Administration gives an opportunity to visit Līgatne Nature Trails, Zvārtes Rock and Āraišu Windmill for free.

Visitors are invited to the Līgatne Nature Trails, which are open after reconstruction. With the financial resources of the Latvian government and the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) new Visitor Centre are built, existing parking-lot are broadened, new sightseeing places are made, current trails are improved, bridges are renewed, and new trail section for the visitors with special needs is made. It is foreseen to be open the viewing tower and the Forest School “Pauguri” soon.

Gauja National Park anniversary is celebrated by publishing memories of Gauja NP staff members, organizing joint works and other activities.

Gauja National Park was founded on 14th of September 1974, when, after few years of coordination work, the Council of Ministers of Soviet Socialistic Republic of Latvia made a decision to establish the first National Park in Latvia.
