Gaujas nacionālais parks

Gauja NP hosts several events linked to getting acquainted with nature's values and cultural heritage.

In wintertime, in December, on the nature trails of Līgatne, Advent gift fair is organized, but during the Meteņi Festival the museum preserve of Turaida joyous celebration is organized to say farewells to winter.

In springtime, in Kubesele along with the congregation of Krimulda Church, Easter is celebrated with a service and nature watch, egg rolling, and swinging. Traditionally, also bird watchers make their way here each spring to learn more about the arriving birds together with ornithologists.

The summer begins with the Environment Day (Vides diena) near the Zvārte Rock, where in the Raganu (Witch) meadow and in the nature trails of Amata, the visitors guided by environmental guides in interesting sessions learn about the secrets of the nature. At the end of July, in Āraiši windmills a splendid celebration of the Jacob’s Day - the new rye bread day is held, when bread and its bakers are honored, by organizing also the Bread Fair (Kukuļtirdziņš). In August, the European Bat Night in Ungurmuiža brings together the bat explorers and bat watchers.

On September 14, the birthday of the Gauja NP is celebrated and the autums errands begin with the Michaelmas (Miķeļdiena) in Lejasbregži, in the yard of Vaidava chair masters, where the new harvest and the ancient chair master craft is honored, and the tempting smell of the Michaelmas soup is lingering in the air across the yard.

It is followed by the Mushroom Day together with the mushroom specialists of the Museum of Nature of Latvia, as well as by gathering of the birdwatchers and ornithologists to give farewells to the migrating birds.

The mutually held events promote cooperation of the local inhabitants and craftsmen with the employees of the Gauja NP administration, thus fortifying reciprocal understanding.
